Hopper Car
I have a fascination with the paintings of American artist Edward Hopper. Somehow, whether through art, imagination or object that is capable of creating the more attractive and suggestive scenes that arouse my imagination.
One of my favorites is Automat oil painted by him in 1927.
A young woman with a post of yellow felt hat all alone in a sterile restaurant drinking a cup of coffee. I look at this and immediately felt his isolation and loneliness as my own. Are you running away? What thoughts are on his mind when looking at the cup?
First, Hopper made us speculate, as it does with all his pictures. Where did it come? Where are you going? You're caught in the middle of a story that can "read" forward or backward in time. I was so impressed by this table the woman became the inspiration for a character in a short story, the thief, and now I write a novel. Beaten by their isolation and restraint, I called Celia.
Searching Hopper table to see what creates emotions and how. Behind the solitude of women is a big window, black with impenetrable darkness at night. The lights or the glare of the lights are relegated to the background giving a condition similar to a tunnel, which leads nowhere. The radiator, squatting, to the left of the table, it appears as isolated as the girl with the composition, very similar, but more communicative than she. The Lonely, only when time is taken permanently etched in my mind.
Just think how many stories could be developed from this photo! Does anyone have a friend or family member to enter this door, hoping the cook? If no one comes, where does she, as you drink your coffee? For a hotel room of sorts? On a train to New York? Who would like Hopper's paintings, like others, that so often represent lobbies of hotels, motels and railroad cars. Or maybe it will change your mind and go home.
Perhaps this picture tells me about the fear of the unknown as we do at every moment in life. Too often, one is unsure and tentative, afraid to venture into the unknown. And then perhaps the child is unable to catch up. After all for me, Celia – the character of my story that inspired this work – became a character who was desperate to rid its self-imposed isolation in the world. And yes, for me – art, painting, sculpture and photography are often a source of inspiration for writing. Of course, all the art [as painting or writing or music] speaks of his own time – ie, time and place where the artist lived.
Hopper painted much of his work in the twenties, thirties and forties of last century, when industrialization and urbanization, Quick were forcing people from their old houses and old ways of life. Therefore, many people felt lost and displaced. And yet touched by his work are universal, regardless of the time and place. Great art transcends time and place and touches a chord around the world that caters to the universal emotions and ideas to us. Like a photograph, Automat is Standing a moment in time that exist in a world that, at the same time seems so ephemeral.
And that's why as an image and still inspires me today Automat.
